Communication & Executive Presenceat the Product Manager level
At the PM level, communication means being able to explain a product decision clearly to engineers, designers, and stakeholders, and to run a meeting that ends with clear decisions and next steps. The evidence is specific: a real audience, a real message, a real outcome.
ScopeA single feature, component, or defined product area within one team.
Evidence expected at this level
What a promotion committee or hiring panel would need to see demonstrated, not just claimed, for Communication & Executive Presence at the PM level.
- Explained a product decision to a non-product audience without losing clarity
- Ran a meeting that ended with explicit decisions documented and communicated
- Written clear specs or briefs that the team could execute from without repeated clarification
A real interview probe at this level
“Tell me about the last time you had to explain a complex product decision to a non-technical stakeholder. How did you approach it?”
A well-calibrated answer to this probe names a real decision, a real tradeoff, and a real outcome. Generic process descriptions do not hold up to follow-up.
