Innovation Behaviorat the Product Manager level
At the PM level, innovation is a shipped result with an outcome, not an idea. The evidence at this level is specific: an unconventional approach, who had to be convinced, and what actually happened after it shipped.
ScopeA single feature, component, or defined product area within one team.
Evidence expected at this level
What a promotion committee or hiring panel would need to see demonstrated, not just claimed, for Innovation Behavior at the PM level.
- Shipped something that was not the obvious solution, with a clear outcome
- Convinced a skeptical stakeholder or engineering team to try an unconventional approach
- Used a rapid test or prototype to validate an idea before committing full development
A real interview probe at this level
“Who had to be convinced to try your unconventional idea, and what evidence changed their mind?”
A well-calibrated answer to this probe names a real decision, a real tradeoff, and a real outcome. Generic process descriptions do not hold up to follow-up.
