At the PM level, market and competitive awareness means understanding who the customer could choose instead of your product and being able to explain how that shapes specific features or positioning decisions. You are reading the competitive landscape, not setting a competitive strategy.

What a promotion committee or hiring panel would need to see demonstrated, not just claimed, for Market & Competitive Judgment at the PM level.
- Can name the two or three closest competitors or substitutes and explain how they differ
- Has used a competitive read to inform a specific feature decision or positioning choice
- Understands where the product is stronger and weaker relative to alternatives
A real interview probe at this level
“Who else could your customer have chosen instead of your product, and how did that shape what you built?”
A well-calibrated answer to this probe names a real decision, a real tradeoff, and a real outcome. Generic process descriptions do not hold up to follow-up.
