Prioritization & Judgmentat the Director of Product level

A Director of Product sets the prioritization standard for a product organization. At this level, prioritization judgment includes deciding how to allocate team capacity across competing product areas, setting the framework that PMs use to make their own calls, and being accountable for the portfolio-level tradeoffs.

ScopeA product area spanning multiple teams, often with PMs reporting directly.

Evidence expected at this level

What a promotion committee or hiring panel would need to see demonstrated, not just claimed, for Prioritization & Judgment at the Director level.

  • Made a capacity allocation decision across multiple teams that required deprioritizing a high-demand initiative
  • Set the prioritization criteria for a product organization and enforced them at calibration
  • Escalated or resolved a prioritization conflict between teams with real business stakes

What changes from Principal PM

Organizational responsibility: developing PMs, setting standards, and owning program-level outcomes rather than feature-level ones.
