A Director of Product is responsible for the operating model of the product organization. The evidence at this level requires showing that the team under your leadership operated more effectively and predictably because of an operating model you designed or improved.

What a promotion committee or hiring panel would need to see demonstrated, not just claimed, for Product Operating Model Maturity at the Director level.

  • Set the rituals, reporting, and decision frameworks for the team
  • Connected the operating model to business outcomes — faster delivery, fewer misses, better decisions

What changes from Principal PM

Organizational responsibility: developing PMs, setting standards, and owning program-level outcomes rather than feature-level ones.

A real interview probe at this level

“What operating model did you build for your product organization, and what improved because of it?”

A well-calibrated answer to this probe names a real decision, a real tradeoff, and a real outcome. Generic process descriptions do not hold up to follow-up.
