Product Strategyat the Chief Product Officer level
A CPO owns the company-level product strategy as a member of the executive team. The evidence standard at this level requires that the product vision shaped the company's competitive position, drove resource allocation across the full portfolio, and was defended at the board level as a business strategy, not just a product roadmap.
Evidence expected at this level
What a promotion committee or hiring panel would need to see demonstrated, not just claimed, for Product Strategy at the CPO level.
- Defined and communicated a company-level product vision that changed how the organization allocated its resources
- Made a strategic decision that was visible to the board and that had a measurable impact on enterprise value
- Set the product innovation agenda for the company, including what categories to enter, exit, or transform
What changes from VP
Enterprise authority: the final voice on product direction, accountable to the board and CEO, with organizational scope across the full company.
A real interview probe at this level
“How did your product vision change the company's strategic direction, and what did you have to stop doing to pursue it?”
A well-calibrated answer to this probe names a real decision, a real tradeoff, and a real outcome. Generic process descriptions do not hold up to follow-up.
