Product Strategyat the Director of Product level
A Director of Product is accountable for the strategic direction of a product area that spans multiple teams. At this level, product strategy includes setting the priorities framework that multiple PMs operate within, making portfolio-level tradeoffs, and ensuring the product area's direction is coherent and defensible at the executive level.
Evidence expected at this level
What a promotion committee or hiring panel would need to see demonstrated, not just claimed, for Product Strategy at the Director level.
- Set a strategic direction across multiple teams that aligned competing priorities into a coherent roadmap
- Made a portfolio-level tradeoff that deprioritized one team's work in service of the broader strategy
- Presented and defended strategic direction at VP or C-level with real business stakes
What changes from Principal PM
Organizational responsibility: developing PMs, setting standards, and owning program-level outcomes rather than feature-level ones.
A real interview probe at this level
“How did you set strategic direction across multiple teams, and what tradeoffs did you make that some teams did not like?”
A well-calibrated answer to this probe names a real decision, a real tradeoff, and a real outcome. Generic process descriptions do not hold up to follow-up.
