What a promotion committee or hiring panel would need to see demonstrated, not just claimed, for AI-Era Product Leadership at the Principal PM level.

  • Defined the AI product strategy or capability roadmap for a platform or product line
  • Set the trust, safety, or governance framework for AI at the organizational level
  • Made a build/buy/partner decision for a major AI capability with explicit technical and product rationale

What changes from Senior PM

Scope expansion: influencing across teams without authority, shaping strategy rather than executing it.

A real interview probe at this level

“How did you define the AI product strategy for your platform or product area, and what governance or trust decisions did you have to make?”

A well-calibrated answer to this probe names a real decision, a real tradeoff, and a real outcome. Generic process descriptions do not hold up to follow-up.
