A VP of Product is a senior leader on responsible product development for the business unit. The evidence at this level requires showing that ethical product standards were connected to business and legal accountability and that the VP took personal ownership of the organization's product responsibility.

What a promotion committee or hiring panel would need to see demonstrated, not just claimed, for Ethics & Responsibility at the VP level.

  • Led the development of responsible product standards for a business unit with legal and regulatory accountability
  • Made a decision to stop or significantly constrain a product capability based on responsibility or safety concerns, with real business stakes
  • Communicated the product responsibility position to the board, regulators, or public stakeholders

What changes from Senior Director

Commercial accountability and org design: connecting product decisions to enterprise value and building the people and process infrastructure around the product organization.

A real interview probe at this level

“What was the most significant responsible product decision you made as a VP, and how did you navigate the competing business and ethical interests?”

A well-calibrated answer to this probe names a real decision, a real tradeoff, and a real outcome. Generic process descriptions do not hold up to follow-up.
